"Scoundrels & Seafarers" Set Sail
Don't miss the inside story of how pirates & privateers won the War of Independence for the Colonies!
I originally thought my Seafarers & Scoundrels book would be out on October 25, but I started getting back feedback from friends who read it. From their input, I did quite a bit of work on it, dumping entire sections, adding new. I finally finished editing and formatting for Amazon. Very big job.
I ordered some hard copy proofs and by the time I went through them and made changes, I was so busy editing, time passed and Amazon locked me out for final changes. I had to start over and I changed the name from Seafarers & Scoundrels to Scoundrels & Seafarers.
First, this is not just a book about pirates, although I include some of the most infamous on the Eastern seaboard. This is a book about how the ill gotten gains of pirates and privateers contributed to the growth of New Jersey and it’s prosperity and also how pirating, privateering, black marketing funded the Washington’s Continental Army and led to the defeat of the British and our independence.
It also highlights the topographic advantages of the State in achieving this goal. If you’d like to get in on some historical gems about New Jersey, and it’s importance as one of the original 13, this is the book for you.
The State’s history and topography are incredibly interesting. Our shores are replete with nooks and cranny’s where pirates once hid from the law and used its shores to bury their treasure in its sands. These men walked the Jersey shore, harassed the people and were basically a menace to society, and all the while inadvertently helping to win the Revolutionary War and changing the course of history.
Here’s a bit from the introduction to the book:
… From the southern tip of Cape May & the Delaware Bay to the northern reaches of Sandy Hook and New York Harbor, the Jersey coast was once the haunt of daring pirates and cunning privateers whose exploits played a crucial role in shaping the early American economy. They were real and they were here.
The New Jersey shoreline, known today for its bustling boardwalks, picturesque lighthouses, and serene beaches, hides a rich and tumultuous history beneath its sandy surface and possibly buried pirate treasure.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Atlantic Ocean was a theater of constant maritime conflict. Two forces called seamen had to decide for good or for bad. Pirates, often romanticized in popular culture, were ruthless seafarers who attacked ships for plunder. Privateers, on the other hand, were state-sanctioned pirates, commissioned by governments to raid enemy vessels during wartime. This blurred line between lawlessness and legality created an environment where piracy and privateering could thrive, particularly along the relatively undefended and strategically located coast of New Jersey.
The isolated sandy shore was a convenient offloading spot for Prohibition smugglers during the Roaring Twenties, but centuries earlier the same South Jersey shore was the location of an enormous trade of smuggled goods estimated in the billions in today’s dollars. Before and during the Revolutionary War, Jersey's shore and inlets provided alluring drop-off points for smuggled and pirated goods from British and other domestic and foreign merchant ships bringing cargo to the colonies.
The daring exploits of maritime marauders are woven into the rich legacy of New Jersey's coastal communities. In this journey, we'll explore how their illicit trade played a crucial role in financing the Continental Army, with the support of the citizens of this storied state.
We'll also examine New Jersey’s unique topography, and how it provided the perfect landscape for these notorious black hearts to thrive, leaving a lasting impact on the region. So, let’s set sail on this historical adventure! * * *
